A bit about the bloggers

Hi! We’re Nelson and Liz, the people behind Photos and Food.
We started this blog as a way to combine two of our passions–photography and food. Nelson enjoys creating all things sweet and savoury, and I enjoy eating the food he makes. But not before capturing images that aim to make everyone’s mouth water just as much as mine.
About Nelson
Nelson enjoys cooking and he’s spent countless hours in the kitchen testing and developing recipes over the years. He’s watched hundreds of hours of food-related documentaries and shows; he’s researched recipes and cooking techniques; and he’s read through many books and food blogs.
Making delicious meals that put smiles on people’s faces, excites him! He’s sincerely and simply happy when family and friends are enjoying a nice home made meal, sitting around the dining room table together.
On top of trying new recipes, Nelson also loves going back to his Portuguese roots through his mom’s memorable cooking and baking. Carmelina, thrilled that her son wanted to recreate her meals, hand-wrote her recipes into two notebooks–some recipes were newer additions, but most were for meals and desserts that Nelson grew up enjoying. We lovingly call these our ‘books of traditions’.
Nelson has fond memories of his youth, and the eight years he lived in the Azores (between the ages of 12 and 20), so these meals makes him truly happy. It helps him stay connected to the traditions and the people he holds near and dear to him, and he loves that he gets to share the food and traditions with me and our kids.
About Liz
So, who am I in all of this? Well, I’m Liz, Nelson’s wife and mom to our two boys–one who’s already a young adult. I did some photography in high school (a long time ago), then I picked up a DSLR camera again around the time our second son was born, and I pushed myself to get creative for fun, again.
The reality, however, was that with full-time work, two kids, and a generally hectic life, my photography hobby became more of a memory, once again. So, when Nelson asked me to work on this project with him, I was ready. I’d missed working on composition, lighting, and just plain getting excited about creating. Plus, I knew there’d lots of taste-testing involved in this project–so, heck ya!
It’s been fun getting back into photography and working with Nelson on something we both enjoy. Even our kids have gotten into the fun — in the kitchen and behind the camera… and they’re excellent (mostly patient) hand models too.
Why we blog
Our goal with this blog is to bring our readers recipes that are approachable and achievable for every home cook; some quick and easy family meals, some mains, sides, desserts, and breads; some Azorean traditions; and some everyday food with a Portuguese twist.
Whether it’s sweet or savoury, we bring you a little bit of everything, and present it with photos that’ll make you want to lick your screen (please don’t though…screens never taste like the food).
Fill your senses and eat well, friends.
