Hi! We’re Nelson and Liz, the people behind Photos and Food.
Nelson has enjoyed cooking for years. He’s spent countless hours in the kitchen testing different foods, he’s watched hundreds of hours of the Food Network, he’s researched recipes and cooking techniques, and he’s read through many books and food blogs. Making delicious meals that puts a smile on people’s faces excites him! He’s sincerely and simply happy when family and friends are enjoying a nice home made meal, sitting around the dining room table together. People tell him all the time that he should try out for cooking competitions, but that’s not what cooking is all about for him.
Nelson has fun trying recipes and developing his own original recipes. Recently he’s also been going back to his roots through his mom’s memorable cooking and baking. During her latest visit with us (on a trip from her home in the Azores), Carmelina left us with two notebooks; both filled with hand-written recipes of meals and desserts–some more recent, but most which Nelson grew up with. Some recipes only list ingredients but no quantities. You see, she’s been cooking and baking for so long that it’s pretty much automatic for her. So, Nelson’s been recreating these meals, one at a time, and he’s been documenting the full list of ingredients, quantities and instructions, so he can easily repeat the recipes himself and share them with others. He has fond memories of his youth, and the years he lived in the Azores, so recreating these meals makes him truly happy. It helps him stay connected to the traditions and the people he holds near and dear to him, and he loves that he gets to share the food and traditions with me and our kids too.
So, who am I in all of this? Well, I’m Nelson’s wife, Liz. I did some photography in high school (a long time ago), then I picked up a DSLR camera again around the time our second son was born. With work, two kids, and a generally hectic life, my photography hobby started to become more of a memory. So, when Nelson asked me to work on this project with him, I was ready. I’d missed working on composition, lighting, and just plain getting excited about creating beautiful pictures. It’s been fun getting back into this and working with Nelson on something we both enjoy. I’m also the gal with the pen (or keyboard, I guess). I enjoy the writing while Nelson enjoys being the tech geek and cook of our blogging duo. We hope that with this skill combo we can bring our readers interesting articles, and share some traditions and recipes that you can’t wait to try–with photos that’ll make you want to lick your screen (please don’t though…screens never taste as good as the food).
Cheers, Nelson and Liz
